Buckwheat pillows – have you ever heard of them? I only learned about them a few years back. I have to tell you that my life has not been the same ever since. The pillows have changed the way that I sleep.
Do you also know that I do not have to replace my pillows as often as before?
Some of them can last from 10 to 20 years! There is a catch though. To make them last as long as you want, you also need to take good care of them.
Why Buckwheat Pillows Get Dirty
Buckwheat pillows are like regular pillows too. The time will come when they will get dirty. It will always be because of how you use your pillow. I have spilled hot chocolate on my pillow about thrice already even if I tried really hard not to do it.
I like spending my morning during the weekend just lying on my bed. The hot chocolate allows me to relax while reading my latest book. Sometimes, I forget that the hot chocolate is placed on the bedside or I just spill while drinking.
My pillow is probably not very happy about it but since it is a buckwheat pillow, it can be even harder to clean than regular pillows. The best thing about this is that most of the time, I just need to wash the pillowcase. The actual buckwheat hull does not need to get wet.
Cleaning Step – How To Clean Buckwheat Pillows
If you have the best buckwheat pillow, things will be much easier for you. Start cleaning by removing the pillowcase of the buckwheat pillow. Your outer pillowcase may need to be cleaned more often as compared to the inner pillowcase. Just remove the outer pillowcase and wash it.
The clean inner pillowcase would just need to be covered with a different outer pillowcase. Having different pillowcases that will fit your buckwheat pillow will definitely be handy.

Step 1: Put the outer pillowcase in the washing machine.
You should never place the whole pillow in the washing machine. Just stick to washing the pillowcase. Placing the entire pillow means that you will soak the buckwheat hulls. They will become brittle and would lose all of the benefits that you get from them.
One reason why I like buckwheat pillows so much is their ability to mold into my head and neck while I sleep. You will lose this benefit if the hulls get wet.
Step 2: Remove the hulls from the inner pillowcase.
The hulls cannot get wet so make sure that you will place your pillow upright and allow the hulls to be placed in a container. You can also place the inner case in the washing machine so that it can be cleaned properly. Take note of some washing machine tips:
- Use only cold water.
- Run the washing machine on a normal cycle to ensure that both the outer and inner pillowcases will be properly cleaned.
- You can also choose to hand wash the pillowcase if you are using a more sensitive cloth for your outer and inner pillowcases.
- Mild laundry detergent will always be preferred.
Step 3: Allow the pillowcases to air dry.
You may be tempted to place the pillowcases in the dryer so that they can dry faster. Doing this might shrink the pillowcases. They might not be perfect for your buckwheat pillow anymore. Air drying may take longer but it will allow you to have perfectly clean pillowcases for your buckwheat pillow.
What Will You Do With the Buckwheat?
Are you wondering what you are going to do with the buckwheat? It is simple, you simply need to place the buckwheat inside the dried inner pillowcase again. Buckwheat will be strong against mold and mildew as long as it will not get wet.
I mentioned earlier that I have spilled hot chocolate on my buckwheat pillow three times. Are you thinking about what I did to ensure that the hulls can still be used? I immediately checked the hulls that could have gotten wet. Thankfully, my pillowcases were able to prevent the liquid from actually penetrating the hulls.
Just in case you spill water or other liquid on the buckwheat hulls, remove the buckwheat from the pillow and allow them to dry first. Once you are sure that they are completely dry, place the hulls back in the pillowcase.
